Ethan, a 5th grader at Canyon Ridge Elementary, is an extraordinary young artist. His talent for art is evident in all his art pieces. Art Starz, one of the after school classes offered through Community Education, has allowed him the opportunity to work with different art mediums and experiment inside each one to create something that is truly his.
“I notice that in many of the demonstrations I do for the class, Ethan will often add extra detail“, says teacher, Jennifer Townsend. “For our architectural bird house drawing, he added depth and dimension to his houses. He turned his clay fish into a whale and added an extra branch with beautiful blooms to his painting.” Art Starz encourages children to find their niche while teaching core principles through many mediums like watercolor, clay, acrylic and pastels. Ethan always looks forward to putting his special “spin” on the project and has really grown in his abilities this semester. We look forward to a bright, artistic future for him! ![]() Going on almost 18 years, Melissa Tarun has been instructing students of all ages in the world of baking. From cupcake designs, to cookie decorating and all the way to Mommy & Me Fondant Fun, Melissa’s classes stemmed from a passion to create custom cakes for friends. Having taught more than 1,000 students since becoming a Wilton Method Trained Cake Decorating Instructor back in 1998, Melissa has made her mark as an instructor in both retail and community education settings. She has even baked her way as an entrepreneur with her business Sweetest Whimsy which specializes in custom cakes and personalized paper and gifts. Although Melissa enjoys her time in the kitchen, she also has a lifelong love of reading, crafting and travel.
