It’s National Boss’s Day! Man, they make a holiday for everything, don’t they? This holiday started in 1958 and is celebrated in the US, Canada, Lithuania and India. It’s usually celebrated on October 16th, but this year that was a Sunday so we are celebrating it today, October 17th. National Boss’s Day was created in order to promote healthy relationships between managers and employees. We all know how important a good work environment is, which includes intra-office relationships. Even if your boss didn’t approve your vacation time a couple of weeks ago, still remind them that you appreciate them. You know you do. Remember those few times you came in late and they never said anything? They’ve got your back—after all, what would their company be without you?
You don’t have to do anything grand. You could write them a card, buy them a coffee or even send them this cute video: Happy National Boss’s Day to all of the wonderful bosses out there. We appreciate you!
Music. Many of us have a secret love-hate relationship with music. Certain songs spark specific memories, others create this deep urge to run a marathon or jump in the boxing ring. Either way, music is an important factor that plays into our daily lives. Have you ever caught yourself drumming on a table top with your pen in hand, or caught a glimpse of yourself head-bobbing to the beat of catchy song? There has got to be some psychological theories to it all, but I’m not here to break all that down. I’m just here to reminisce on the fact that music is a huge deal – it can affect our mood and drive our determination to get things done. ![]() My big question for you… What stirs you in the world of music? Have you ever wanted to learn a new instrument? Guitar, piano or violin perhaps? Don’t let another day go by… start learning to play now, so that even more memories can be made.
Not the formal musician-type? No worries! We can all take some time to appreciate the creativity that others express through music. Lyrics, or no lyrics… music still has an impact. So whether you continue being the awesome pen-drummer or professional head-bopper, carry on my friend. Find unique ways to create your own music… it’s good for the soul.

An NEISD Community Education sponsored program for kids in grades K-5
“Gone are the days of roller rinks and lock-ins, and certainly no one is dropping off children at the movie theatre. Now kids are spending more time indoors and socializing through electronics on the weekend. Our vision was to create a fun, safe and well-supervised youth program, full of sports, games, contests, music, dancing, crafts and plenty of opportunities to socialize. What if we kept it to a price point that was affordable for the masses and mixed up the activities on a weekly basis so there was always something fresh and on-trend that kids could look forward to? What if we gave parents a place where they were comfortable dropping kids off? And what if kids were actually excited to go? We created an innovative event plan and organized a monthly calendar of events. Then pulled together staff; the ‘best of the best’ from our district’s after school program and sent out flyers to the neighboring schools. Unsure of what to expect, we opened on September 9, 2011 and our hunches were confirmed when 139 children joined us for opening night. That opening night was 5 years ago. We’ve had the opportunity to meet and serve countless families and watch their children grow up from Friday to Friday. Friday Nite Live is synonymous with childhood memories for the kids in our area. Over the past 5 years, our attendance has exceeded 40,000 children. We’ve aged out an entire population of elementary kids and we miss them! But every Friday night, there are new families to meet and new memories to make. Challenges have come and gone, but sticking to our core values of fun, safe, supervised entertainment for kids and service to families has allowed us to thrive.” ~Guest blogger Karen Shofner of Friday Nite Live Check out their upcoming calendars and visit FNL for online registration and more information. Everyone knows that Tuesday is Taco Tuesday. It’s my favorite day of the week. (It’s always nice to have an excuse to eat tacos once a week… right?) Come to find out, there’s an actual national holiday for tacos AND it falls on a Tuesday! October 4th is National Taco Day.
Tacos seem to get trendier and trendier, but they’ve been around for a while now. According to the official National Taco Day website, anthropologists found evidence that “inhabitants of the lake region of the Valley of Mexico ate tacos filled with small fish” dating back to the 16th century. It seems like almost everything has been in a taco— we’ve gone from small live insects, locusts, snails, brain, and tongue to filling our tacos with sweet potatoes, avocado, fried mushrooms and poblano peppers. Want to participate in this joyous celebration of food? Check out these recipes for your National Taco Day dinner.. or any other Taco Tuesday. |
