By Jake Parmley Pokémon GO has officially swept the world into a frenzy, earning over 21 million daily active users last week, topping app charts and adding billions to the market value of Nintendo. On the surface, the premise of exploring your surroundings and flicking Poke Balls at made-up creatures seems simple or just a new form of mindless entertainment. Parents and teachers may be wondering whether they should be encouraging kids to catch ’em. As with all technology, they should be aware of and supervising children’s gaming, especially in light of recent safety concerns about Pokémon GO. However, there are valuable educational skills and life lessons embedded within Pokémon GO’s design. Here are seven reasons why you should support children’s interest in this innovative augmented reality (AR) game. (Read more on the Level Up Village blog.) Does your young one seem to always have the wiggles? You’re not alone! Kids are naturally active beings. Their bodies are constantly growing and all of the built-up energy needs to be released somehow. Coach, and science enthusiast, John MacLaren partners with NEISD Community Education in providing a variety of opportunities for those wiggly bodies to not only release energy, but to also enhance sport performance, social skills and practice overall good sportsmanship.
Here are Coach MacLaren’s top five benefits of active kids: 1. Active kids tend to get into less trouble when they are busy releasing energy. Help your kids spend their time being active in a positive way like playing basketball, volleyball, swimming or training. 2. Overall better health. We all want a healthy life for our children. Allowing them to choose a sport or activity that interests them is a great way to encourage a healthy lifestyle. 3. They learn to set goals and become achievers. Encourage your kids to plan for their future by thinking about what they would like to accomplish in their lives and start them on the path to making it happen. 4. Parents get some time to relax. When your kids are active in summer camps, are busy playing on sporting teams or are engaged in an active life style it provides the opportunity for parents to have a few hours of relaxation that is often needed. 5. Active kids have more fun than kids who sit around. Who doesn’t enjoy making new friends, letting go of some pent-up energy and learning a new skill? Bring on the fun with an energy-releasing activity this summer! Tammy Jones is an independent dance instructor and the Director of Dance Ballroom SA. Fall classes will be posted on our website July 25. The first two weeks of summer classes held by North East Community Education at Cibolo Green Elementary were off to a great start for summer fun. Students from all over North East San Antonio gathered together to learn something new and enjoy various summer activities. Here are a couple students who’ve enjoyed their classes. Shelby Mays, 6th grade, is very much into Fashion and Design. She says she likes both designing and modeling and is even considering it as a possible career choice. Shelby is seen drawing free hand without using templates to create unique clothing designs in her Fashion Design class held by Fastforward Kids. Kyle Stephens, 4th grade, among many others, is spotted testing out the kite and stomp rocket that he built himself in Engineering for Kids’ Aerospace Engineering class. Kyle says “Engineering is fun”! Having the opportunity to launch the rockets themselves was an exciting experience. Many other engineering focused activities like straw rockets, parachutes and foam airplanes were also enjoyed throughout the week. The fun isn’t over yet! Next stop… Redland Oaks Elementary! Community Education will continue to offer a variety of fun summer classes for kids ages 4 and over during the weeks of July 11th and July 18th.
