Community Ed instructor Mary Field is teaching our Chinese 1 class at Madison HS this fall. I wondered how she learned Chinese & why she wanted to teach it to adults so I asked her a few questions. This is what she had to say:
"I learned Chinese while living in China. In addition to learning the language for everyday life, I also enrolled in university Chinese classes. I started in a beginner class in Soochow University in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province and then kept with in until I was in a class "Legal Chinese" at the China University of Political Science and Law in Beijing. I started teaching Chinese to adults after I moved back to the United States. I met a lot of people who were interested in learning the language after I moved back, so I thought, why not? Let's give it a go. Adults don't get enough credit when it comes to learning a second language. People have in it their heads that the ability to learn a new language disappears after the age of 8 or something. Sure, the process becomes a bit different as people get older, but I have seen adult students make great progress! I lived in China for 7 years. I have lived all over the country too, including Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Suzhou and Anhui province. China is not an easy country for travel, but it is very rewarding for tourists who get off the beaten path. I love sharing my travel recommendations with students." If you are interested in learning Chinese this fall, classes begin September 19 at 6:30 PM. Registration details can be found here. Thanks Mary for being a part of our Community Ed family!!
