An NEISD Community Education sponsored program for kids in grades K-5
“Gone are the days of roller rinks and lock-ins, and certainly no one is dropping off children at the movie theatre. Now kids are spending more time indoors and socializing through electronics on the weekend. Our vision was to create a fun, safe and well-supervised youth program, full of sports, games, contests, music, dancing, crafts and plenty of opportunities to socialize. What if we kept it to a price point that was affordable for the masses and mixed up the activities on a weekly basis so there was always something fresh and on-trend that kids could look forward to? What if we gave parents a place where they were comfortable dropping kids off? And what if kids were actually excited to go? We created an innovative event plan and organized a monthly calendar of events. Then pulled together staff; the ‘best of the best’ from our district’s after school program and sent out flyers to the neighboring schools. Unsure of what to expect, we opened on September 9, 2011 and our hunches were confirmed when 139 children joined us for opening night. That opening night was 5 years ago. We’ve had the opportunity to meet and serve countless families and watch their children grow up from Friday to Friday. Friday Nite Live is synonymous with childhood memories for the kids in our area. Over the past 5 years, our attendance has exceeded 40,000 children. We’ve aged out an entire population of elementary kids and we miss them! But every Friday night, there are new families to meet and new memories to make. Challenges have come and gone, but sticking to our core values of fun, safe, supervised entertainment for kids and service to families has allowed us to thrive.” ~Guest blogger Karen Shofner of Friday Nite Live Check out their upcoming calendars and visit FNL for online registration and more information.
