Human Rights Day, an international holiday that not many people are aware of. It’s funny to think that the most inclusive holiday to the human race often goes unnoticed.
Human Rights Day recognizes the day in 1948 that the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. What is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, you ask? The Office of the High Commissioner explains it as ‘Drafted by representatives with different legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, it set out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected.’ Among the list of fundamental human rights are the right to equality, right to life, liberty and personal security, freedom from slavery, right to marriage and family, freedom of belief and religion, right to peaceful assembly and association, right to education and many, many more. The UN’s theme for Human Rights Day this year is all about standing up for someone else’s rights. ‘This year, Human Rights Day calls on everyone to stand up for someone's rights! Many of us are fearful about the way the world is heading. Disrespect for basic human rights continues to be wide-spread in all parts of the globe. Extremist movements subject people to horrific violence. Messages of intolerance and hatred prey on our fears. Humane values are under attack.’ For more information on Human Rights Day 2016, check out their website here.
