Nothing makes us happier here at Community Ed than hearing from our students! Recently, we received a raving review on our Mindfulness for Daily Life class with Carrie Edmond. Check out the testimony below!
“I had read about mindfulness on social media, and this class peeked my interest. I wondered was it even for me? I was able to learn that mindfulness is about being fully present in the moment, whatever the moment may be and having no judgements. Most importantly, I learned to breathe in, breathe out…and repeat. Sounds funny right? Everyone should know how to breathe. When you learn to calm your breath it calms your mind! I learned that mindfulness is for everyone! I started doing mindful meditations, which are so relaxing! I started practicing mindfulness in my daily life. For example, having a conversation with someone, doing yoga, washing the dishes and even taking a shower. I continue to write in the journal we started in class. The gratitude journal helps to keep me thankful of the small things even when the big things are going wrong. Overall this class has been a huge benefit in helping me manage my stress and daily struggles with my health. Great instructor and wonderful class! Loved it!” And there you have it! We love hearing from you, so if you have your own testimonial for one of our classes, feel free to email us at [email protected] and tell us about it.

Maren Phillips began painting at age three by “copying the comics” and other than a period of about eight years, she has never stopped. After her eight-year hiatus, Maren dusted off her drawing pads and participated as a vendor in a church festival drawing portraits. That’s when it all came back to her. Maren began drawing and painting dog portraits at dog shows and did so for about 25 years.
Maren decided to make another change and devoted herself to obtaining a Masters of Fine Arts degree. Her plan was to teach at the local university. However, she was once again led in a different direction and that’s when Maren found us. She finds teaching Community Education classes “fun and exhilarating.” In each class she teaches she loves to “wake up minds and brains to seeing differently.” This summer she is teaching an abstract painting class for the first time and she says she “loves it!” When not teaching a Community Ed art class, Maren travels across the country promoting and painting en plein air (painting outdoors). She takes commissions for portraits (people and pets) and sells her paintings in galleries all over the United States. Maren also teaches privately and in smaller workshops in San Antonio. You can find out more about her at www.marenphillipsartlines.com. This fall she is planning to teach Beginning Watercolor, Drawing Basics, Adventures in Oil Painting, Portrait Painting and Quick Studies in Painting. Class details will be revealed on July 18 so stay tuned! According to the Better Health Channel, kayaking can enhance your overall aerobic fitness, strength and flexibility to include:

Gym memberships these days can be competitive with some gyms starting to resemble mini-resorts. Heavy weights, special gym attire and the overwhelming space full of unknown equipment can be intimidating for a first-time gym-goer. Gym-idation (gym intimidation) can start to set in and if we let it, it can be the reason why we stop going altogether. Thankfully, there are exercises that don’t require heavy equipment, special attire or awkward grunts to get the results we want. We can even do them watching TV! I’d call it active listening! Why not get your heart rate pumping with a few leg lifts here and there or an arm swing to-and-fro while watching the latest episode of Scandal? Here are some of my favorites, and if done consistently you should see results. Do what you can and what works for you. Exercises off the beaten path (non-gym exercises): Sources:

If you watch ‘Dancing with the Stars’ I’m sure you understand the want to just get up and dance while the performances are on. Maybe your hips swing a little from side-to-side or your imagination runs wild as you picture yourself on the big screen as one of the top five teams. While observing from the comfort of your couch won’t make you an instant dancing star, taking a leap of faith in enrolling in a dance class could not only get you those rockin’ dance moves, but could prove to be beneficial for your body and overall health. New friends, building confidence and encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle are only some of the many benefits that can spring from taking up dance as a hobby. Need a little more convincing?
